KELLY MCGONIGAL : THE WILLPOWER INSTINCT

Kelly McGonigal is a psychologist who educates us about willpower and its aspects in our lives. She said that Willpower have three main components namely Won’t , Will and Want power. She described won’t power as the ability to resist the temptations or desires and Will power is the ability to do something that is hard for you or is uncomfortable. Want power is the real skill that keep us motivated and dedicated to our long-term goals. Willpower is an ability to do or don’t do things according to our desires, temptations, distractions and ambitions which definitely have an impact on our future goals and career. After she studied a case from 1848 of Phinease cage tells us that self-control lives in the pre-frontal cortex of the brain. Self-control is a key to willpower, to live a healthy, happy and successful life you have to balance both good or bad sides of self-control. You can’t live completely stress free or distracted life this way you live a robotic life. She stated that stress is the enemy of willpower and guilt is one of its kind. Sleep deprivation and obesity also plays a vital role in secretion of stress hormones, slows down the responsive part of brain and made human sluggish. She tells us about some meditation to control stress, distractions and temptations of our life. Our brain release some kind of chemical after seeing something tempting, you feel dopamine pulsing through your veins manipulate you to buy something or eat or drink or smoke. Usually sellers use this trick to manipulate people with the welcoming smell and if a person is well aware of their trick he will not be duped. Awareness automatically shifts the self-control mode in the brain. Lastly, Kelly McGonigal discuss her own willpower challenge was to control her desire to shop and control her discomfort or anxiety of doing something that lead her closer to her ambition.

In the Ted talk presented to us by Tim Ferris who is an author , entrepreneur and podcaster, showed us his picture which was taken after the dance practice. He said he was happy but after a week and half later he planned to commit suicide. Ferris inherited bi-polar depression and seen a lot at his age. His life was saved by some lucky coincidence and that was the turning point. He then decided to experiment some methods to control his mood swings, self-paralysis and self-destruction which led him to stoicism.
