DAN ROAM “ SHOW AND TELL ” :
In the 45 minute talk at Google , Dan Roam , who is the author of a book called “show and tell” discuss about the various aspects of presentation, storytelling and pitching. He begins his talk with the examples of the rich and famous ,who ,despite being in public figures , made massive blunders while on stage. According to Dan Roam “presenting is as much science as it is art” and his entire talk revolves around the idea , concepts and rules for making better presentations.
Despite the fact that , once you’ve learned the art of presentation it can be pretty fun , 74% of Americans, according to a survey ,would rather die than give a presentation. The fear before giving a presentation is real but it can be overcome by various techniques and methods.
Further into the discussion Dan talks about the basic idea of a presentation, he states that it is very much similar to that of going on a trip. They should either be extraordinary and impactful or there should be none at all.
The key to an extraordinary presentation is the impact ;it has on its audience. The change or the impact can be a major one or a minor one it does not matter , but there should be something and the rules to achieve this are very simple, just three things, your presentation shouldn’t be BS , it should be truth . Second rule is that have your truth be told with a story and the last and the most important way to have the audience remember you or your idea is to have pictures along with the story , because the human brain memorizes thing in the form of pictures or references rather than words.
There can be various forms of truths which Dan explains with the famous “is the glass full or empty ?” experiment . Once you have your truth Dan says to believe in it and tell a story about it. People are changed either by information or knowledge or actions or beliefs. Once you know what sort of change you want to bring about into the audience you can then easily choose your storyline as to being either one, Report, Explanation, Pitch or a Drama respectively. Dan then moves on to discussing more about dramas and how the famous movie franchises have a similar way of storytelling.
In conclusion Dan Roam talks about the importance of storytelling into businesses. It was one of the most comprehensive talks on the topic of storytelling I’ve come across so far .
