1914 : The Shaping Of The Modern Muslim World

Dr. Yasir Qadhi enlightens us regarding the major events that set the stage for the modern world. He said that 1914 was the beginning of a series of changes which leads to abolishment of Islamic Caliphate.
In 1914, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand assumed to be the catalyst of the “Great World War 1”, he was assassinated by the group of Serbians, ignited the ethnic tension which resulted in the ultimatum to Serbia from Austro-Hungarians. They attacked Serbia thats when Russia come to their allies defence and German allied with Austro-Hungarians as an excuse to invade several states. The establishment of two camps takes place, first was named “Allied Forces” which includes The Russians, The British, French, Italians and USA. Second was named “Central Powers” includes The Germans, The Austro-Hungarians, The Bulgarians and lastly The Ottomans which was the most crucial state for Muslims.
The Sultan at that time attempted to remain neutral but at the end get involved in to the war because of their agreement with Germans, known as  “Ottoman-German Alliance” which ended up brutally for Ottomans. In the end Germans surrendered and the war come to an end. The duration of the The Great War was from 1914 - 1918. The war was officially ended between Germany and the Allies with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. 70 million soldiers had  fought and 10 million lives were taken. After the war four largest empires were decimated The German Empire, The Russian Empire, The Austro-Hungarian Empire and The Ottoman Empire. It was the first war where aeroplanes and tanks were used. The War had serious consequences after it ended because of the utilization of modern technology and chemical weapons public at that time suffered with influenza pandemic commonly known as “Spanish Flu” by which 100 million people died.

In the Ted talk presented to us by Tim Ferris who is an author , entrepreneur and podcaster, showed us his picture which was taken after the dance practice. He said he was happy but after a week and half later he planned to commit suicide. Ferris inherited bi-polar depression and seen a lot at his age. His life was saved by some lucky coincidence and that was the turning point. He then decided to experiment some methods to control his mood swings, self-paralysis and self-destruction which led him to stoicism. The word “Stoicism” means to endure the pain or hardship without expressing the feelings.
