How the supermarket helped America win the Cold War

The Cold War between America and Soviet Union (Russia) featured three races namely a space race, an arms race and a farms race. The Cold War take place after World War I and World War ll. The winner of the farms race was obviously America and it was a Pyrrhic victory. According to Shane Hamilton, an American Historian, the first supermarket was established in 1930 in United states. Supermarket is the industrial agriculture system that enables the affordability of mass produced foods. Supermarket is a well stocked and a one- stop shopping and service emporium because it contains all the good weather it is dairy, dry or meat products. The share of food rise up to 48% from 20% between 1946 to 1954 and by 1963, it risen up to 70% and that benefited America. The purpose of supermarket was to drive down the prices for urban consumers as in 1920 the U.S become a majority Urban nation. To complete the need and to manage the system The U.S Department of Agriculture was established in 1862 which had a long history of funding and conducting scientific research on live stock breeding and seed development. It went even further from farm machinery to animal breeding but the biggest changes to American agriculture were mechanization and automation. The Soviet Union was way behind the modernization in agriculture. According to Timmer it was not a technological issue, it was a management and marketing problem. They didn’t have any idea of what to produce in their farms or what the consumers want. The Soviets didn’t grow enough food and didn’t grew the right things. They didn’t have prices on the items to recognize whats cheap or expensive in this circumstance they asked the help from their archenemy United States and that was an embarrassing stage for the Soviet Union. They wasted so much money on the production of such items that didn’t even get a chance to enter supermarket but surely led them to downfall. In conclusion, the supermarket indeed played a major role in the victory of America in the Cold War.
